I happened upon a fabulous store, (n)habit, while traipsing down 12th Avenue South, and it brought some pretty significant questions to mind: What REALLY distinguishes design and style from fashion? If you’re designing something that not only functions beautifully as a cohesive whole, but actually preserves and consciously considers Mother Earth, isn’t that the most fashionable thing of all?

Rachel Martin, owner and designer of (n)habit, first delved into the eco-conscious architectural design realm when she lived in Portland, Oregon . When she and her husband, contractor Edward Martin, moved back to Nashville (Edward’s hometown) last year, they realized that the availability of eco-friendly architectural design products was meager. They had also realized while living in Portland that you don’t have to sacrifice style to live green. Being the “do-it-yourself-ers” that they are, they took it upon themselves to open a store that is accessible to contractors, homeowners and designers alike.

Rachel also relishes in the symbolism behind the company logo. The (n) is a form representing one’s home. The (n) is also the symbol for the definition of a noun in the dictionary. The resources you use to create your home, Rachel says, defines how you inhabit it. It additionally symbolizes getting in the habit of utilizing earth-friendly resources to create your home.

Fran Lebowitz once said, “ All style is personal-that’s what distinguishes it from fashion.” If Rachel Martin isn’t as stylish and fashionable as they get for the good she is creating, then I don’t know who is.
